These would have been designed to keep safe the "secret to another world" contained in Big Whoop, which appears to be the E-Ticket. How the four of them built this massive system of tunnels is beyond me, but then again implausible stuff happens in those old Monkey Island games all the time.

It's possible that the tunnels and so forth under Big Whoop compose at least part of the "plenty of booby traps" which Marley and his crew apparently buried with the treasure.

That being said, I have a couple of theories about all this. In my opinion this also means that, in Monkey Island 2, Big Whoop is definitely just the treasure, and "Big Whoop" isn't the name for what is buried underneath, ie the tunnels and whatever else is going on in the weird ending, although apparently it is the name of the mysterious Amusement Park at the end. This cutscene seems to reveal that LeChuck knows all along that there is something buried under Big Whoop. At first I thought it was maybe something they'd recorded for the Special Edition which was never implemented, but then I checked a transcript of the game's dialogue which was made before the Special Edition was released.

For my own amusement I was using a program to look through the recorded dialogue for the Special Edition of Monkey Island 2 and came across some curious dialogue I hadn't heard before. I haven't quite managed that yet, because so far I feel like nothing seems to really cover every bit of the plot, but in my exploration I have come upon something else.

I've been trying to come up with an explanation for the ending, and I've been scouring blogs, interviews and game transcripts looking for any scraps of information which will help me to piece together a more coherent explanation for the ending than that which has come before.

Currently I'm very interested in the Monkey Island series of graphic adventure games, particularly the curiosities of the second game, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. A lot of the jokes have nothing to do with the classic stuff, but even those that reference classic material still land - even if you don't realize there's a connection.Typically I go through phases where I'm really interested in this or that thing. Despite being saturated with nods, winks, and neon signage to pretty much all of the earlier games, "Return to Monkey Island" doesn't rely on that familiarity. What I mean is, if this is your first time hanging out with the Caribbean's most dashing pirate named "Guybrush," there's plenty of entertainment to be had here. It's a proper "Monkey Island" adventure through and through is what I'm saying.Īnd much like previous "Monkey Island" games, familiarity with older entries is both not necessary and essential. It's something that will take him to places both familiar and new, with some recognizable faces alongside several new ones.

As always, Guybrush will have to contend with his long-time nemesis - the dreaded zombie pirate LeChuck - in a race to finally, at long last, after all this time, find the Secret of Monkey Island.
